📊 24% say ‘vax status’ in Niagara Region DEI discrimination survey

“We’re looking to learn from the various communities across Niagara region what they’re witnessing or experiencing in terms of discrimination and bias, whether it’s in their workplace, in their school, in the general community, all of those aspects.”

When Niagara Region’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee sent out a survey last fall, it got back about 1600 responses. Of those respondents who claimed they have experienced discrimination, 24% of them responded that they’ve experienced discrimination due to “Vaccination Status”.

“Vaccination Status” was not listed among the offered types of discrimination, meaning that these repondents all wrote in their response.

“We’ve been told in the past that 600 responses for a population the size of Niagara is considered statistically significant”

“It is important to note that the survey was conducted during the COVID-19 Pandemic, with multiple restrictions on public activities, as well as many employers restricting employment for individuals without proof of vaccination. This resulted in about a quarter of survey respondents including discrimination due to their vaccination status as part of their responses,” the document says on Page 11 under its “Limitations” section.

The COMMUNITY DEI EXPERIENCES REPORT says the top five themes for a vision of a positive Niagara:

inclusive, diverse, free, safe, and accepting

top five themes for kind of Niagara they want

Notably, “Equity” is among the smallest of the words, smaller than “Affordable” or “Equal” or “Respect”.

It is likely that the vaccine status crowd inflated the word “free” beyond what it otherwise would have been.
