🌎 ‘Niagara Climate Change Summit’ at Brock pledges ‘energy transition’ and carbon emission reduction of 50% by 2030

On June 28, 2022, Niagara Region, Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA), and Brock University hosted a “Climate Change Summit” on campus.

Thorold Today reported “over 100 individuals, representing dozens of local organizations” signed a “pledge” to take action on climate change, including setting emission targets: 50 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Former Guelph Mayor Karen Farbridge gave the keynote address which discussed “adaptation” and “mitigation” for municipal “pathways to net-zero”.

“Hosting this summit is a crucial first step in our efforts to ensure that all of Niagara, both in the public and private sector, are aligned in our efforts to mitigate and adapt to the climate change”, said Niagara Region chair Jim Bradley in a press release.

Speeches were livestreamed through Niagara Region’s YouTube channel and on a website dedicated to the summit.

“Climate emergency”

The region passed a motion in September 2021 which “declared a climate emergency to accelerate action on climate change in the community”. The “climate emergency” declaration directed funds and resources and put into motion the initiative for the summit.

The motion was put forward by chair Jim Bradley, a former Liberal MPP for over 40 years.

Last September, Regional Council passed a motion declaring a climate change emergency, allotting financial resources to address the impacts of our changing climate as well as directing the initiation of region-wide summit focused on the issue.
